What most of us don’t realize is that internet challenges like the ice bucket or the choking game are quite dangerous to some degree. Internet challenges can cause serious injuries and can even lead to death.

Some of the challenges caught on tape might seem harmless enough, but they can easily put your life in jeopardy. The best example would be the choking game. For those of you who don’t often land on the wrong side of YouTube, here’s some facts about this seemingly harmless game.

The goal of the game is basically to choke someone using your hands. Teens often resort to this kind of games, because they are good ways of getting high. Yes, by choking someone to the point of cutting the oxygen supply to his or hers brain, you induce a state of euphoria, very similar to that sensation felt after smoking marijuana or other recreational drugs.

But there’s a catch to this game: you just have to know how long to choke the person. Choke him for too long and he might wind up dead, choke him too little and he won’t feel a thing. Basically, there’s a 90 percent chance of winding up in a body bag, with a little tag attached to your toes.

Moving on, we arrive just in time to witness another internet-borne challenge called the “duct tape challenge”. The goal of this game is simple: escape! Basically, you sit on a chair and your friend ties you to that chair using a whole roll of duct tape. And you have only 3 minutes in order to complete the challenge.

Seems harmful enough, but you haven’t heard the whole story behind this challenge. Skylar Fish, a 14-year old from the US heard of this challenge and decided to give it a try. Together with his best buds decided to play a couple of rounds.

And so, Skylar’s buds wrapped the teen in layers of duct tape, making him look like Boris Karloff in “The Mummy”. Skylar struggled to free himself from the layers of duct tape but somehow managed to hit his head on the frame of the window.

After hitting his head, Skylar tripped, fell out the window, hitting the concrete ground. When his friends arrived to make sure Skylar is alive, the teen was having seizures.

Skylar’s mother called the ambulance which rushed the teen to the hospital. According to the physicians working at the ER, due to his fall, Skylar crushed his left eye socket, thus losing vision. Moreover, the teen also suffered a brain aneurysm and had to be operated.

The doctors who patched Skylar up declared that they used no more than 48 stitches in order to suture his wounds. Due to his stunt, Skylar may irreversibly lose vision in his right eye. Apart from that, the teen is alright and recuperating.

This comes to show us that internet challenges can cause serious injuries and even end in death. Skylar can consider himself fortunate becaus he could have been killed on impact or become comatose.
