The daughter of president-elect Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump, has been surrounded by controversy since her father won the presidential election. More precisely, her involvement in her father’s presidential affair might create some major conflicts of interest. Why? Not one time reports surfaced that she was participating in meetings that were not part of her attributions. So naturally, people have begun speculating that she might be using her father’s newly-gained political status for the benefit of her business.
Ivanka Trump joined her father in numerous important meetings with foreign leaders from Turkey, Argentina, and Japan. It is true that Trump has declared that his two boys along with Ivanka will be handling the Trump Organization from now on. However, while Eric and Donald Jr. have been connected to their father’s business since they were practically old enough to do it, Ivanka has not. Trump’s daughter made her own name in the industry with her fashion lines. And those do not have anything to do with the Trump Organization.
So, to say that she joined her father to discuss business would be a pretty big lie. Or the avoidance of truth, to put it more elegantly. The idea is that by participating in these political meetings, Ivanka might be using her and her father’s status to promote her own business. So the line between the family’s business and Trump’s presidential career might become increasingly thin. Which is not really acceptable.
Shortly after the election, the three Trump children met with Trump Organization’s business partner in the Philippines, Jose Antonio, in the Trump Tower. Reportedly, they discussed real estate ventures. However, this is bizarre considering that the relationship between the U.S. and the Philippines is not the best one at the moment.
In an official statement, the Trump Organization said that
“We are in the process of vetting various structures with the goal of the immediate transfer of management of The Trump Organization and its portfolio of businesses to Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric Trump along with a team of highly skilled executives.”
Ivanka’s business is the most dangerous one
Donald Trump has also said that as a president, he will no longer have any interest in his personal businesses. According to him, his plan is to separate himself from the brand, thus passing it to his children. He might succeed at it, but the fact that he actually introduced his children in his transition team is questionable.
Even if all his children have their own personal businesses, Ivanka’s fashion lines are the most know and successful of them. This is why her involvement in her father’s political business might have the greatest impact. Anti-Trump protesters have already started asking for a boycott. Nordstrom, Macy’s and many other retailers are refusing to give up Ivanka’s products and this is why they are angry.
Ivanka’s fashion brand published a letter last week. In it, they announced that she would be separating her personal social media accounts from the ones of the company. Still, this does not mean that she cannot use her father’s influence to help her business.
