British actor Jude Law has reportedly been cast to play a young Albus Dumbledore in the sequel for “Amazing Beasts and Where to Find Them”. The very talented wizard and later, Hogwarts headmaster, is one of the most popular and even iconic characters in the Harry Potter wizarding universe. David Yates will return to direct he second movie in the series too, and actor Eddie Redmayne will be back playing Newt Scamander. Another new addition to the wizarding world is actor Johnny Depp, who will be playing Dumbledore’s enemy, the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, and who also made an appearance in the first movie.
The young Albus Dumbledore
Albus Dumbledore was first played by late actor Richard Harris, for the first two movies in the Harry Potter series. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2002. After that, the role went to Michael Gambon, who played the legendary wizard until the end of the series. Now, Jude Law, who is also a two-time Academy Awards nominee, will portray Dumbledore a long time before he became Hogwarts’ headmaster or Harry Potter’s mentor. According to some rumors, during the events of the second “Fantastic Beasts” movie, Dumbledore will still be the transfiguration professor at the wizarding school.
Author J.K. Rowling has already written the script for the second installment and it will reportedly be darker than the first. With Grindelwald slowly taking over, Newt and his friends will have some difficult decisions to make. At the moment, nobody knows much about Dumbledore’s role in the movie. It will be interesting to see how the author displayed his homosexuality. Also, if the wizard will be open about it, in the movie.
The studio reportedly looked at pretty much every British actor for the role. They reportedly had talks with Christian Bale, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch and even Richard Harris’ son, Jared Harris. However, it seems like Jude Law was the one who fit the role perfectly. Director David Yates said that he is very excited to work with such a brilliant actor. Also, that he is sure Law will portray Dumbledore perfectly and will understand the implications of this very important character. The sequel to “Amazing Beasts” will hit theaters on November 16, 2018.
