Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Talks about Relations with the United States

This Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke about the future of relations with the United States. Russia seems to not take much interest in what the Obama administration has to say anymore. Instead, Moscow is looking forward to the result of the November 8 election. Whether it’s Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, a new president will mean a different voice in talks between Washington and Moscow. If that will mean a shift in policy depends on who the winner of the election is going to be. As relations between the United States and Russia keep growing colder, the Russian Foreign Minister insists that Russia is open to dialogue.

The Two Presidential Candidates View Russia Differently

The two presidential candidates in the race for the White House have different views regarding Russia. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has accused Russia of interfering in the US election and favoring Republican candidate Donald Trump. But Russia has consistently denied these allegations. In interviews, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin says that the Kremlin is prepared to talk to either one of the two candidates. But, then usually goes one to say positive things about Donald Trump.

The Republican candidate has said that Russia and the United States working together would be a good thing. Also, he has said that if he wins the election the first meeting that he would have as president would be with Russian President Vladimir V. Putin. Hillary Clinton has criticized Trump for his position on Russia. She has said that Putin would prefer Trump to be the president only because he would be a weak one in the relationship with the Kremlin. Also, she has accused Russia of hacking American servers and leaking information. In the past, Hillary Clinton has called Vladimir V. Putin a strongman and criticized the way he runs Russia.

Sergey Lavrov Says Russia Wants to Work Together

Despite one candidate in the presidential race being more favorable to Russia than the other one, Russia officially does not play favorites. This Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated the Kremlin’s message that Russia is perfectly willing to work with the United States. Lavrov said that the next US administration is going to have to work together with Moscow to solve the many crises facing the world today. The Russian Foreign Minister believes that with situations as complex as the one in Syria, the United States cannot handle things on its own.

“If you remember a few months ago (President Barack) Obama said just that: ‘We are the ones who should lay down the rules.’ It may have been arrogant but at least he was honest. If this is the way our American partners think, it means we will have to go through a painful period of realization that no one can do anything on their own,”

said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The Russian Foreign Minister made these remarks on a visit to Greece. The visit comes just days before the presidential election in the United States. And two weeks before President Barack Obama is going to visit the country. Sergey Lavrov met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras as well as Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias.
