An Oscar-winning director
Jonathan Demme was born in Baldwin, Long Island and had one of the most extraordinaire careers in filmmaking. He managed to become known in the 1980s, with comedies like “Melvin and Howard” (1980), “Swing Shift” (1984) or “Something Wild” (1986). In 1991 came his peak moment when he won the Oscar for Best Director for the movie “The Silence of the Lambs”, starring Anthony Hopkins as the famous character Hannibal Lecter. Later, he directed some other very acclaimed movies like “Philadelphia” (1993) or “Rachel Getting Married” (2008). He also helmed some documentaries during his amazing career.
It is worth noting that his movie “Silence of the Lambs” was one of the few to win an award in every major category. It won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay for Ted Tally, Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins and Best Actress for Jodie Foster. Interestingly enough, the studio did not spend too much money on advertising campaign, because it did not have too much. Moreover, this was a rare occasion when the Academy did not ignore a horror movie, as it usually does.
An amazing career
His next big movie, “Philadelphia”, also won the Best Actor Oscar for Tom Hanks. Denzel Washington also starred in the movie. People close to him knew for some time that he was fighting a hard battle with cancer. He was a good man, someone capable of empathy who worked very well with almost everybody. This is why the condolences messages have begun pouring on social media platforms. Jonathan Demme was a respected director who was not afraid to take some directorial risks. Unfortunately, he could not fight any longer and the horrible disease got the best of him.
