One of Nintendo’s most popular franchises, Super Mario Brothers will come out to the new iPhone. The announcement quickly boosted Nintendo’s shares, as gamers and investors everywhere hope the video game giant is finally going to embrace mobile gaming.
Investors trust that the new Super Mario Run will be just as successful as Pokémon Go.
Financial analyst Tomoaki Kawasaki said, “Launching a well-known Nintendo character on the globally penetrated iPhone is one of the best scenarios that investors have hoped for”
Nintendo announced the game will be available on app store in December. No news yet as to when it will come out on Android devices. But the company has made it clear that it will not be an iOS exclusive game.
The videogames company’s shares spiked by 13% following the announcement. It’s the highest they’ve ever been since their other great hit earlier this year, Pokémon Go.
Shigeru Miamoto, Mario’s creator said that titular character, “evolved whenever he has encountered a new platform.” And, so far, Mario has seen every type of major gaming platform there is.
The game’s concept looks and feels very similar to the classic Mario format. Players must guide the character through a series of obstacles and collect coins as they go. The game also has a multiplayer feature, that allows users to compete against each other, and build “kingdoms”.
In spite of the rise in popularity of mobile games, Nintendo has been reluctant to tap into that market. The company instead focused almost exclusively on its own gaming console. They avoided bringing one of their most beloved franchises to mobile platforms, in an effort to boost their console sales. But with recent dips in revenue, Nintendo has started to question its strategy.
Super Mario Run is developed in conjunction with DeNa. DeNa will be handling back end operations, while Nintendo is in charge of content.
Could Super Mario Be the Next Pokemon Go?
When it is released, this will be the first mobile game owned by Nintendo. In spite of the fact that Nintendo made the Pokémon series of games popular, Pokémon Go was not their product. Super Mario Run will have its work cut out for it, if it wants to reach Pokemon Go’s level of popularity.
Part of the appeal of Pokémon Go was its novel concept. Players actually had to travel to the locations marked on the map, and hunt for Pokémon in the real world. So far, Super Mario Run seems like a fairly solid, but traditional game.
It remains to be seen if the appeal of the franchise as a whole is enough to make the game popular.
Many popular mobile games, such as Candy Crush, include pay-to-play features, such as purchasing in-game currency that players can spend on upgrades, or reducing the time it takes to perform a specific action. Gamers are quite weary of these tactics, especially when it comes to games that are not free-to-play. Miamoto announced that the game will have a set price, and there will no additional purchasing requirements.
Apart from the fact that the game will come out in December for iOS, Nintendo didin’t offer a lot of details. The community is still hoping to find out more about the content itself, how many levels the games is going to have, more specific details about gameplay, and the final price tag of the game.
